Hedge's Memorial Best Bets

Muirfield Village, sometimes called Jacks Place, is the host of The Memorial Tournament this week. The tour's best head to Dublin, Ohio, which last year played host to Viktor Hovland taking down Denny McCarthy in a playoff. This is certainly one of the tour's best non-major, premier events on the schedule. What comes with a premier event is an elite field of talent and plenty of players to pick from.

What this article is meant to do is inform you about what kinds of players to look at when making your bets. I do not claim to be a golfing expert (although I did shoot 73 on Sunday for what it is worth) but I have been betting on the sport for years. This advice is not to "bet your house on these plays" but instead give you something to think about as you scroll through the betting lines tonight or tomorrow morning.

Important Notes About This Event

  • Hovland won the event at -7, which was the worst winning score Greg Norman won at even par in 1990.

  • Historically the winning score was -13 or better in eight of the last ten years, so expect plenty of birdies.

  • Household names have won the last six years, so expect a top-tier player to win this event (Hovland, Horschel, Cantlay 2x, Rahm & DeChambeau).

  • This week, look for ball strikers and Tee-to-Green upside guys to finish well here.

Our Favorite Bets For The Week:

Justin Thomas Top 20 (1 Unit At -110) or Top 10 +245 (0.5 Unit)

Some bettors in the golfing space will say "Not a lot of value at -110" but a winner is a winner, even in a future like this. So we offer up a couple of choices for you here on ole JT, one of the best ball strikers on tour for years. If you asked me pre-Masters my thoughts on the two-time major winner I would say you are crazy. But in his three events since then he may have found something, finishing T5, T21, and T8 respectively. The Top 20 is the wise play in my mind, but if you want that flashy plus sign winner, I think this event has a potential top 10 finish for Justin.

Keegan Bradley Top 20 (+150 For 1 Unit) or Top 10 +405 (0.5 Unit)

Funny enough the second player we like this week is Keegan Bradley. If you watched Full Swing you know Keegan was rather upset Justin beat him out for the Ryder Cup team (which he should not have in this writer's opinion despite Justin's play overseas). But Keegan is flying under the radar, despite being 26th in the FedEx Cup and 14th in the world rankings. T2, T18, and T21 is his last three events, I think this is a great buy high on an elite player.

Top Scandinavia Player: Viktor Hovland +110 1 Unit

This is my favorite play of the entire week in Ohio. You have only three Scandinavian players in the field and Hovland comes in as the defending champion. His counterparts he will go up against here are one of our favorite young guys Ludvig Aberg and his fellow Swede Alexander Noren. Aberg has been fighting an injury since Augusta and missed the cut at the PGA Championship, his only event since then. Noren is coming off a missed cut at a Hamilton course that didn't play as difficult as Muirfield Village will. Take the defending champ to beat the two struggling Swedes this week.
